Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Combine the flour and baking powder; gradually add to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9-inch round cake pan.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack.

Once cooled, frost the cake with your favorite frosting and sprinkle with colorful sprinkles.
