In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the cake is baking, prepare the caramelized apple topping. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 10 minutes.

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
