Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, combine the cake flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the almond extract.

Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix just until incorporated.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the batter.

Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer the cakes to wire racks to cool completely.

Once the cakes are cooled, sprinkle the almonds over the top of one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and sprinkle with almonds again. Finally, place the third cake layer on top and dust with powdered sugar.
