  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and a pinch of sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, lemon zest, vanilla extract, almond extract, and softened butter. Mix well.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and eggs to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and transfer it to a greased baking sheet. Shape it into a ring, leaving a hole in the center.
  8. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake the cake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.
  11. Sprinkle powdered sugar over the cake and garnish with candied cherries if desired.
