In a large bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in molasses.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.

Remove cakes from the oven and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Once cooled, spread apple butter between each layer of cake.

In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and water to make a glaze.
