Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10 minutes. Set aside.
  3. In the prepared cake pan, arrange the sliced apples in a single layer. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the apples. Dot with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and remaining butter. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter over the apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy!
