In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just blended.

Divide the batter equally into three bowls. Add red food coloring to one bowl and blue food coloring to another. Leave the third bowl plain.

Spoon the colored batters into the prepared cake pans, creating a red, white, and blue layer.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
