Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, milk, and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten each mound slightly with the back of a spoon.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are set. Allow them to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. For the filling, in a mixing bowl, beat together the powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla extract, milk, and black food coloring gel until smooth.
  8. Spread a generous amount of filling onto the flat side of half of the cookies. Top with the remaining cookies to create sandwich pies.
  9. For the spiderweb decoration, in a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth. Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip.
  10. Pipe concentric circles onto the top of each whoopie pie. Using a toothpick or skewer, drag lines from the center outwards to create a spiderweb pattern.
  11. Allow the spiderweb whoopie pies to rest for 15 minutes to allow the decoration to set.
  12. Serve and enjoy!
