Shoofly Crumb Cake is a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dessert that originated in the 1800s. It gets its name from the sweet molasses filling that attracts flies, hence the term ‘shoofly’.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and butter until crumbly.

Reserve 1/2 cup of the crumb mixture for the topping.

To the remaining crumb mixture, add molasses, boiling water, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.

Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch square baking dish.

Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture evenly over the top.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
