Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, and butter until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup of the mixture for the crumb topping.

In a separate bowl, dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Stir in molasses.

Add cinnamon, cloves, salt, and egg to the molasses mixture. Mix well.

Gradually add the molasses mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the reserved crumb topping evenly over the batter.
