  3. In a separate bowl, dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Stir in molasses.
  4. Add cinnamon, cloves, salt, and egg to the molasses mixture. Mix well.
  5. Gradually add the molasses mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the reserved crumb topping evenly over the batter.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool for 30 minutes before serving.
