Scones originated in Scotland and are traditionally served with clotted cream and jam as part of a cream tea.

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vanilla extract, and egg.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. If desired, fold in raisins or other dried fruits.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick round.

Use a round cutter to cut out scones from the dough. Place the scones onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
