  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract and red food coloring.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk, vinegar, and baking soda. Add the buttermilk mixture to the butter mixture alternately with the flour mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
