  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg whites one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Mix until just blended.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
