Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (23cm) round cake pan.

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.

Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once the cake has cooled, dust with powdered sugar and serve with whipped cream and fresh berries.
