Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare 6 9-inch cake pans.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk.

Divide the batter evenly into 6 bowls and add food coloring to each bowl to create vibrant colors.

Transfer the colored batter into the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until smooth.

Add the heavy cream and continue to beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.

Once the cakes have cooled, level them if necessary then frost each layer with the buttercream frosting, stacking them on top of each other.

Use any remaining frosting to frost the sides and decorate the cake.

Let the cake rest for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
