Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternately with the milk. Divide the batter evenly into six separate bowls.

Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl, creating six different colored batters.

Spoon the colored batters into the prepared cake pans, creating layers of different colors.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once the cakes are cooled, stack them on a serving plate, spreading a layer of buttercream frosting between each layer.

Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream frosting.
