  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into six bowls.
  7. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix until desired colors are achieved.
  8. Spoon the colored batter into the prepared cake pans, layering the colors.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once the cakes are cooled, stack them on a serving plate, spreading a layer of buttercream frosting between each layer.
  12. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream frosting.
  13. Let the cake rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
