  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Melt the butter and pour it into the prepared cake pan. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the melted butter.
  3. Arrange the pineapple slices on top of the brown sugar. Place a maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple slice.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  5. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  7. Pour the batter over the pineapple slices in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  9. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  10. Invert the cake onto a serving plate and carefully remove the cake pan. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving.
