Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a cake pan.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and molasses until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
