Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

Peel and slice the pears, then arrange them in the bottom of the cake pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the molasses.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with hot water. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the batter over the pears in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.

Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a serving plate.
