  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange the sliced pears on top, then sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts.
  5. Spoon the remaining batter over the pears, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle additional brown sugar and walnuts on top.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Serve the pear crumb cake as is or with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
