Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange the sliced pears on top and sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts.

Spoon the remaining batter over the pears and smooth the top. Sprinkle with additional brown sugar and cinnamon, if desired.

Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
