Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9-inch baking pan.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and molasses.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the hot water, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

Stir in the buttermilk until well combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serve the gingerbread cake on its own or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
