Molten chocolate cake, also known as chocolate lava cake, was invented by French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in New York City in the 1980s.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour four ramekins.

Melt the dark chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl over simmering water.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and eggs until well combined.

Gradually add the melted chocolate mixture to the egg mixture, stirring constantly.

Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix until just combined.

Divide the batter evenly among the prepared ramekins.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is still slightly jiggly.

Remove from the oven and let the cakes rest in the ramekins for 5 minutes.

Carefully invert each ramekin onto a serving plate and gently tap to release the cake.
