  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the mashed bananas to the butter mixture, mixing well.
  6. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the banana mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
