Mincemeat pies were originally made with actual meat, but over time, the recipe evolved to include only fruits, spices, and suet.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a pie dish.
  2. Roll out the shortcrust pastry and line the pie dish with it, leaving some pastry hanging over the edge for sealing.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the mincemeat, chopped apple, dried fruits, sugar, butter, and mixed spice.
  4. Spoon the filling into the pastry-lined dish.
  5. Roll out the remaining pastry and use it to cover the filling. Seal the edges by pressing the pastry together with your fingers or a fork.
  6. Make a small hole in the center of the pie to allow steam to escape.
  7. Beat the egg and brush it over the top of the pie.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the pie rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
  10. Serve warm or cold with custard or whipped cream.
