Maraschino cherries were originally made from marasca cherries, a sour cherry variety native to Croatia and Italy.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter, milk, vanilla extract, and egg.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Fold in the chopped maraschino cherries and cherry juice.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
