Devil’s food cake is often referred to as the opposite of angel food cake, as it is rich, moist, and indulgent.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  4. Stir in boiling water and mix until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a separate mixing bowl, beat unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  9. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake.
