The Lunar Landing Cake was created to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and milk to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour in the boiling water while stirring the batter.
  5. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once the cake has cooled, spread whipped cream on top and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
  9. Serve and enjoy!
