Coffee cake doesn’t actually contain coffee in the recipe. It is called coffee cake because it pairs well with a cup of coffee.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk and sour cream. Mix until just combined.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the topping ingredients: flour, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon.
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Sprinkle half of the topping mixture over the batter. Repeat with the remaining batter and topping mixture.
  7. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Serve and enjoy!
