The Lord Baltimore Cake is a traditional layer cake named after the second proprietor of Maryland, Cecilius Calvert, also known as the Lord Baltimore. It is believed to have been created in the late 1800s in the Baltimore area, and its distinct layers of cake and cherry filling topped with toasted meringue make it a unique and delicious dessert.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg yolks one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove the cakes from the oven and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Spread the cherry preserves on top of one cake layer, then place the second layer on top.
  10. In a large bowl, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  11. Gradually add in the confectioners' sugar and almond extract, beating until stiff peaks form.
  12. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the meringue mixture, then sprinkle with sliced almonds.
  13. Place the cake in the oven and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown.
  14. Remove the cake from the oven and let cool for 1 hour before serving.
