Coffee cake is not actually made with coffee, but it is called coffee cake because it is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  5. Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a small bowl, toss the apple slices with the brown sugar.
  6. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Top with half of the apple slices and half of the chopped walnuts. Repeat the layers with the remaining batter, apple slices, and walnuts.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
