Marble cake gets its name from the marbled appearance created by swirling different colored batters together.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract, lemon zest, lemon juice, and molasses.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just blended.

In a small bowl, mix together the cocoa powder and hot water until smooth.

Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan. Spoon dollops of the cocoa mixture on top, then swirl with a knife to create a marble effect. Pour the remaining cake batter on top.

Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
