  4. Beat in the egg yolks one at a time, followed by the lemon zest and lemon juice.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk.
  6. In another bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form.
  7. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  9. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
