Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  4. Divide the batter into two equal parts. Add red food coloring to one part and black food coloring to the other part. Mix until the color is evenly distributed.
  5. Pour the red batter into the prepared cake pan. Top with the black batter, creating a ladybug shape.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag or plastic bag with a small hole cut in the corner.
  8. Pipe white chocolate dots onto the black part of the cake to resemble ladybug spots. Use the black decorating gel to draw a line down the center of the red part of the cake to resemble a ladybug's back.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Dust the ladybug cake with the cocoa powder mixture to create a dirt effect.
  10. Serve and enjoy!
