Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.

Peel and core the apples, then thinly slice them. Arrange the apple slices on top of the batter in the cake pan.
