Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

Pour batter into prepared pan.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack.

Frost or decorate as desired.
