  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the red food coloring and vanilla extract.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk, vinegar, and baking soda. Add the buttermilk mixture to the batter alternately with the flour mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.

  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of the cream cheese frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
