The tradition of carving pumpkins into Jack-o’-Lanterns originated in Ireland, where people used to carve turnips or potatoes instead.

In a separate bowl, mix together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and orange food coloring.

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
