Hot Cross Buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday in many countries as a symbol of the crucifixion.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Add butter and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix well.
  3. Stir in raisins and milk to form a soft dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a greased baking sheet.
  8. In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, lemon juice, and water to make a glaze.
  9. Use a piping bag or a ziplock bag with a small corner snipped off to pipe a cross shape on top of each bun.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let the buns cool on a wire rack.
  12. Once cooled, drizzle the glaze over the buns in the shape of the cross.
  13. Serve and enjoy!
