Bread bowls originated in San Francisco in the 1800s and were popularized by the famous clam chowder served in sourdough bread bowls.
This is vegetarian recipe. Dish can be prepared in 115 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 6.

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

Add salt and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place on a greased baking sheet.

Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Bake the bread bowls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.

Once cooled, cut off the top of each bread bowl and hollow out the center to create a bowl shape.
