  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Cut the beef steak into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a large pan, heat some oil over medium heat and brown the beef steak on all sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add the chopped onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Cook until softened.
  5. Add the button mushrooms and cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir well to coat.
  7. Pour in the Guinness beer and beef stock, stirring constantly.
  8. Add the Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
  9. Return the beef steak to the pan and bring to a simmer.
  10. Cover the pan and transfer to the preheated oven. Cook for 5 hours.
  11. Remove the pan from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  12. Increase the oven temperature to 200°C (400°F).
  13. Transfer the beef mixture to a pie dish.
  14. Roll out the puff pastry sheet and place it over the pie dish, trimming any excess.
  15. Beat the egg and brush it over the pastry.
  16. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper.
  17. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
  18. Serve hot and enjoy!
