Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, molasses, milk, and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well after each addition.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and arrange the sliced pears on top.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
