Despite its name, German Chocolate Cake is not from Germany. It was actually named after Sam German, an American chocolate maker who developed a type of dark baking chocolate that was used in the original recipe.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually blend into the creamed mixture. Stir in the milk until batter is smooth. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  3. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool layers in pans on wire racks for 15 minutes. Remove from pans, and completely cool on racks.
  4. Spread coconut pecan frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake. Sprinkle with shredded coconut and chopped pecans.
  5. Let the cake rest for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
