French Apple Pie, also known as Tarte Tatin, is said to have been created by accident when the apples were mistakenly caramelized in butter and sugar instead of being cooked in a pie crust.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out one pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Mix well.
  5. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust.
  6. Dot the top of the apples with small pieces of butter.
  7. Roll out the second pie crust and place it on top of the apple filling. Trim and crimp the edges.
  8. In a small bowl, beat the egg with the milk. Brush the egg wash over the top crust.
  9. Make several slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  10. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
