Malt balls, also known as malted milk balls, were invented in the United States in the late 1800s and have since become a popular candy treat.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Stir in the malted milk powder.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. In a chilled mixing bowl, beat the whipping cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  8. Frost the cooled cake with the whipped cream and sprinkle the crushed malted milk balls on top.
  9. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving.
