  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and espresso powder.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  9. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of whipped cream on top. Repeat with the remaining cake layers.

  11. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
  12. Slice and serve.
