  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the almond extract.
  4. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the sour cream and milk.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
  6. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and let cool completely on wire racks.
  8. Once cooled, spread frosting between the layers and on top of the cake. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
