Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, heavy cream, and peppermint extract until smooth and creamy.
  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of peppermint frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
  9. Sprinkle crushed peppermint candies on top of the cake for decoration.
  10. Let the cake rest for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  11. Enjoy your Devil's Food Cake with Peppermint Frosting!
