Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until smooth and creamy.
  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of the brown sugar buttercream on top. Place the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining buttercream on the top and sides of the cake.
  9. Allow the cake to rest for at least 1 hour before serving. Enjoy!
